More than 15 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the US in 2014; 90% of them on women. Yet plastic surgery remains an unseemly subject in our culture. Thankfully, we have plenty of comedians—female comedians—and no one is better equipped to dismantle taboos.

This irreverent, hilarious new documentary is former costume designer and journalist Joan Kron’s filmmaking debut—and, at 89, Kron isn’t about to mince words for the sake of social niceties. Featuring commentary from such icons as Phyllis Diller, Roseanne Barr and the late, great Joan Rivers, Take My Nose… Please! takes no prisoners in its quest to better understand the pressures placed on women to adhere to society’s arbitrary standards of beauty.
