Original Title: Maria (y los démas)

Running Time: 96min
Film Year: 2016
Category: HBO Ibero American Competition

Nothing is exactly as it should be for María (Barbara Lennie). She has a lover, but he doesn’t seem to actually like her. She has a job at a publishing house, but what she really wants is to be a writer. Her beloved father is out of hospital, but she can’t believe he now wants to marry his nurse. No matter how frustrated María is with her world, however, the only thing she has the power to change is herself.

Spanish director Nely Reguera’s debut is a charming comedy about self-actualization. As played by the luminous Goya-Award winning Lennie, María reminds us that adult independence is always a work in progress.
