A darkly captivating character study, writer-director Fernando Guzzoni’s sensational second feature follows Santiago youth Jesús (Nicolás Durán) as he slips from adolescent inertia to criminal activity. Much to the frustration of his widower father (Alejandro Goic), Jesús shows little interest in finishing high school or spending money wisely. Yet neither father nor son is prepared for what happens after Jesús and his pals viciously gang up on a defenseless kid late one night in a cemetery.
With its arresting crepuscular images and superb naturalistic performances, Guzzoni’s carefully calibrated drama raised complicated moral questions about one’s responsibility to oneself, to one’s society and, most problematic of all, one’s own kin.
