A deeply affecting drama of family and belonging, the fiction feature debut of veteran documentarian Joshua Z Weinstein ushers us into a cloistered world rarely seen in movies—while simultaneously telling a story infused with timeless quandaries and universal truths.

Set in New York’s orthodox Hasidic Jewish community and performed entirely in Yiddish, Menashe hews close to its eponymous protagonist, a grocery store clerk reeling from the recent death of his wife and struggling to retain relations with his young son. Because tradition prohibits Menashe from raising his son alone, Menashe must cede custody to a relative. His rabbi, however, grants Menashe one week to connect with his son—a week during which Menashe is determined to prove himself a worthy parent.

Menashe will be preceded by the Oscar-nominated short documentary, Joe’s Violin, with producer Raphaela Neihausen in attendance.
